Fermo Ghisoni (Caravaggio c. 1505 - Mantua 1575) area of Lamentation over the Dead Christ, circa 1550 Oil on panel 130 x 100 cm The artwork is accompanied by a study by Professor Alessandro Delpriori and an infrared reflectography examination, available on request by email. Professor Delpriori writes: "The figure of John the Evangelist has an extraordinary expressiveness that descends from Lorenzo Lotto's Po Valley trials, but precisely such mobile draperies are found identical in mid-century Po Valley painting. In particular, they are the offspring of the elegant figures of Lorenzo Costa, active in Ferrara and Bologna, but also in Mantua for the studiolo of Isabella d'Este. Indeed, the painter who seems closest to the style of this painting is Fermo Ghisoni, the most active of Giulio Romano's Mantuan followers".
