Domenico Robusti also called Domenico Tintoretto (Venice 1560 - 1635) circle of Penitent Saint Mary Oil on canvas 83 x 73,5 cm Domenico Robusti was taught by his father, Jacopo, who helped him paint the Sala del Collegio and the Sala del Senato in the Doge's Palace in Venice. From the late 16th century onwards, he concentrated on painting religious scenes for private devotion. Having forgotten his father's powerful colours, he expressed himself in sombre tones, effectively interpreting the ideas of the Counter-Reformation. The canvas under examination is inspired, with some modifications and in contrast, by the painting by Domenico Robusti now in the Pinacoteca Capitolina (oil on canvas, 111.4 x 92 cm, inv. 44843).
