Jean Restout (Rouen 1692 - Paris 1768) workshop of Praying Madonna Oil on canvas 46 x 37 cm The canvas, evidently intended for private devotion, originates from the drawing that went to auction at the Cornette de Saint Cyr in Paris on 28 November 2017, from which the author found inspiration to create the head of the Virgin immortalised in the painting Descent of the Holy Spirit, preserved in the Louvre in Paris. However a second hypothesis should be investigated that would see the work being attributable to Jean Jouvenet, given his Pentecost fresco preserved in Versailles and given that Restout inherited many drawings from his master Jouvenet.
